The EU imports twice as much green technology as it exports

In 2021, the EU will spend 15.2 billion euros on green energy products (wind turbines, solar panels and liquid biofuels) from other countries. Meanwhile, Eurostat said that the EU exported less than half the value of clean energy products purchased from abroad – 6.5 billion euros.
The EU imported €11.2bn worth of solar panels, €3.4bn of liquid biofuels and €600m of wind turbines.
The value of imports of solar panels and liquid biofuels is much higher than the corresponding value of EU exports of the same goods to countries outside the EU – 2 billion euros and 1.3 billion euros, respectively.
In contrast, Eurostat stated that the value of exporting wind turbines to non-EU countries is much higher than the value of imports – 600 million euros against 3.3 billion euros.
EU imports of wind turbines, liquid biofuels and solar panels in 2021 are higher than in 2012, indicating an overall increase in imports of clean energy products (416%, 7% and 2% respectively).
With a combined share of 99% (64% plus 35%), China and India are the source of almost all wind turbine imports in 2021. The largest EU wind turbine export destination is the UK (42%), followed by the US (15%) and Taiwan (11%).
China (89%) is by far the largest import partner for solar panels in 2021. The EU exported the largest share of solar panels to the US (23%), followed by Singapore (19%), the UK and Switzerland (9% each).
In 2021, Argentina will account for more than two-fifths of the liquid biofuels imported by the EU (41%). The UK (14%), China and Malaysia (13% each) also had double-digit import shares.
According to Eurostat, the UK (47%) and the US (30%) are the largest export destinations for liquid biofuels.
